Mohiniattam Classical dance by Dr Deepti Omchery Bhalla

Students of various institutions of Dehradun , Mussoorie were treated to a rare lecture demonstration of Mohiniattam , a solo classical dance form of Kerala by Dr Deepti Omchery Bhalla . The concert series was made possible by SPIC MACAY ,the Society that has been active in Dehradun since the past 21 years , is the only organization in the country that endeavors to educate and bring the youth closer to their vast cultural heritage by bringing great maestros to teach and demonstrate their art forms. Deepti Omchery is a rare combination of singer, dancer, researcher and author, equally talented and accomplished in each.Recipient of the National Sangeet Natak Akademi Award by the President of India she is currently the Professor of Carnatic Classical Music at the Faculty of Music & Fine Arts, University of Delhi. She has performed in major dance festivals in India and abroad and has several publications to her credit.
During the lecture demonstrations that were held at various schools and colleges i.e. The Army School, Clement Town, Convent of Jesus and Mary, the IGFNA , she enthralled the students by the intricacies of this unique dance form. Pieces portraying the celestial dance of Lord Shiva, the emotive ' lullaby ' , the Tillana had the students in a trance . The accompanying musicians on the Mridang , Edaikka ( a unique rhythm instrument) and the flawless and powerful vocal support enhanced the performance even further .
The concerts were all interactive with Deeptiji making students and staff perform the Mohiniattam gestures with their hands and students were called on the stage to make an attempt to learn the intricacies of dance form . At the end of each lecture demonstration ,a question answer session helped in educating the youth even further . It was one of the most successful concert tours of 2008 in Ddun and Mussoorie .

Dhrupad comes in Doon with Padmabhushan R F Dagar

hi all....I must say that dhrupad was one of its own kinds...Dagar Sahab was so happy to be here to perform in schools inspite of his age and health not supporting him in the Roza Days...We had fabulous audience in The Asian School on the 12th Sept '08 and Jaswant Modern School on the 13th morning...I was fortunate enough to spend so much time with them...The best thing which touched my heart was that after so many communal problems in the country now a days Dagar Sahab started both his performances with a saraswati shlok..He taught the importance of Om...He seemed to be a true example of that any form of art does not depend on our religion...Me as a member of Spic Macay would want to have Dagar Sahab again in Dehradun as we in todays world want people like him to help us not forget our culture alongwith the brotherhood in our country

BEGINNING OF SPICMACAY

An idea originates and finds someone through whom it can manifests itself. That fortunate someone, experiences during the birth process, a feeling which is beyond description. Imagine for a moment that you are witnessing the creation of the universe. The "big bang" of SPIC MACAY came in 1972 at a concert of Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. After a few sporadic concerts (notable amongst them was that of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan) at Columbia University, New York, under the aegis of the India Club of Columbia University during the period 1972-76, the idea took a more defined direction in 1977 in India. However in 1979, a two-day programme again at IIT Delhi of Ustad Bismillah Khan, Dagar Bandhu, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Ustad Sitahid Parvez turned out to be a marginal success. MEFYS( Mechanical Engineering Final Year Students) organized the programme. It was at this programme that the name SPIC MACAY was first launched and the aim expressed was not to fight Westernisation but the process of deculturisation.
